Saving Private Ryan . . . And Me

One of my favorite movies is “Saving Private Ryan” from 1998. In that movie an Army Private named Ryan has four brothers who are killed in combat. Ryan is the last surviving son so the Army decides to send him home. Ryan is somewhere in France in combat himself and is hard to locate so a squad of 7 men led by a Captain is sent to find Private Ryan.

In the course of events that follow, Ryan is found and sent home while several of the squad are killed in combat, including the Captain. In the last scene, time has advanced. Ryan is now an old man visiting the battle sites in France and is seen standing alone over the grave of the Captain who died in the search for Ryan. Ryan is in deep thought wondering if he was worth the lives of so many good men.

His wife approaches Ryan, he turns to her and asks, “Have I been a good person?”. She acts surprised that he would ask such a question and begins to protest but he repeats the question. “Have I been a good person?”

Finally she assures him he has been a good man. With that Ryan acts a little relieved. Then he turns, stands at attention and salutes the grave of the Captain.

Thinking on this movie brought to mind the fact that one day there will be a time in everyone’s life when they will ask themselves, “Have I been a good person?”.

The older I get the more I think about it. Have I really been a good person? You might wonder, “Why do you ask?” and my answer is, at one time in a spiritual sense, I was just as lost as Private Ryan. But God sent His Son, Jesus, looking for me. Many times He found me but I refused to go with Him. Then one day when everything else had failed to satisfy me, I turned to Him and He accepted me just as I was, a desperately lost sinner.

And now in the “Golden Years” I, like Private Ryan, stand before an empty cross on which Jesus Christ died to show me the way “home”. In front of the cross is a grave, but it is also empty. I ask God the question, “Have I been a good person? Have I been good enough to deserve to come “home” to heaven?” And the answer I will receive from God is the same answer every person will receive. “No, you have not been a good person and no, you don’t deserve heaven. But Jesus, My Son, has been perfectly good and He is willing to impute, or transfer, His goodness over onto you . . . . if you will accept it. That’s the only way home to heaven.”

How could anyone turn that down? I’m not good enough to go to Heaven on my own efforts and never could be. But Jesus is good and will give me His goodness if I will take it! Which I will, and do by believing and saying “Jesus, take my sins, my wickedness and make me a good person. Amen!”.

And now, like Private Ryan, I stand before the empty tomb and salute my Lord and Savior, not with a hand salute but with my heart, and I say, “Jesus, I love you. Thank You for saving me”.

Men’s Clothing Material Needs To Change

We live in Iowa where the summers are hot and humid while the winters are cold and dry. I’ve often thought that if men’s clothes were made different a considerable amount of money could be saved on heating and air conditioning. It would also help the environment by cutting back on heating/cooling requirements.

In the summer clothing needs to “breathe” but in winter clothing should hold in body heat. Unfortunately it seems garment manufacturers don’t have a handle on that concept as yet.

As a man I don’t like to buy summer shirts made of polyester and cotton because the combination of materials don’t “breathe” like all-cotton shirts. Shirts and pants made of 100% cotton are comfortable to wear in the hot summer months because air can pass through the material. In addition, cotton acts as a “wick” absorbing sweat, carrying it to the surface where it evaporates, cooling the skin. It used to be that all-cotton summer shirts were hard to find and when you did find some the colors were so weird you wouldn’t want to be seen wearing them.

A few years ago something happened in the garment industry which changed the way men’s clothing were made, shirts in particular. They started producing all-cotton shirts & sweaters for winter. In my opinion that is one of the biggest mistakes they could have made because 100% cotton shirts are just plain cold! They need a some polyester in the material to block in body heat!

So I appeal to the garment industry to begin to turn this trend around and start putting polyester into winter shirts again but leave the polyester out of the summer wear!!! You will not only sell more but will also be helping the environment by allowing us to cut back on the thermostat in the winter and raising it in the summer!

Now I feel better. 🙂 I’ve been wanting to get this out for a long time 😉

Gas Prices – Why Do We Cater To OPEC?

Are you fed up with the price of gasoline?

Chances are, your answer is a resounding, “YES!”.

Well, so am I.

According to a recent study, nationwide there are a handful of shale oil fields that could contain as much as 17 billion barrels of oil! And. . . according to a report by the U.S. Geological Service in April of 2008, “The Bakken is the largest domestic oil discovery since Alaska ‘s Prudhoe Bay , and has the potential to eliminate all American dependence on foreign oil. . . . . . Even if just 10% of the oil is recoverable… at $107 a barrel, we’re looking at a resource base worth more than $5.3 trillion.”

Here are the official estimates:

– 8-times as much oil as Saudi Arabia
– 18-times as much oil as Iraq
– 21-times as much oil as Kuwait
– 22-times as much oil as Iran
– 500-times as much oil as Yemen
– and it’s all right here in the Western United States

So why do we sit back and wait for OPEC to raise (or lower – LOL) the price of oil?

Forget about “going Green”.

Let Al Gore go green with envy and let’s increase oil production in the U.S. Just think how many jobs would be created!

Principalities, Powers, Spiritual Wickedness in High Places

I had a call from a Christian friend in Ghana, W. Africa yesterday.  He was sharing with me the mindset of some people who live in Africa.   It seems they still cling to old traditions, gods, and beliefs rather than accept the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.   My thought on this is that it’s not exclusively confined to Africa but much of the world is still held captive by Satan and his demonic horde.   It’s a battle that has continued from the fall of Adam.  But one day Satan will be cast into the Lake of Fire & Brimstone, as prophesied in Revelation 20:10.   Then the war between the two seeds of Genesis 3:15 will be over.

In the meantime the Seed of Christ (meaning his Church) is fighting smaller battles on a daily basis.  Who are we fighting?  Epheshians 6 gives the answer:

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.   For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”

In a natural war, fighting with an invisible enemy and winning the battle would be an impossible feat.  But we’re not in a natural battle.  We’re in a supernatural war, one which is fought by combining faith with words (scripture) and producing unlimited power against the enemy.    Jesus set an example for us as he went throughout the countryside teaching, healing, casting evil spirits out of people and even raising the dead.   He didn’t raise a knife, sword or spear over the enemy, everything was accomplished by faith in scripture and using words of authority.  Now that’s power!

At the beginning of his ministry, Jesus quoted Isaiah saying,

“ The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound”   (Isaiah 61:1)

Jesus accomplished all that and more. Now He’s in Heaven at the right Hand of the Father. He has given His Church a mandate, which is to carry on the work He started on earth. With this mandate comes power and authority to proclaim the Good News throughout the earth.

And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power (Gr. exousia, or authority) is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. (Matthew 28:18-20)

The Church of Jesus Christ has been given authority over the enemy, Satan, but we have been “programmed” by modern-day religion to believe otherwise.

Hebrews 13:8 says:

“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today and forever”.

He did miracles, deliverances, and healings when He was on earth and He does the same today . . . . but through His Church.

It’s time for the Church to rise up with its God-given authority to defeat the purposes of the Devil.

Fed Up With Cable/Satellite TV Companies

Back in the 50’s & 60’s there were 3 TV channels to choose from. On some nights, especially Sunday’s, it was hard to know which one to watch because the progams were all good.

Today cable & satelite TV companies offer over 200 channels and it’s hard to find just one that’s good enough to watch.

If we subscribe to a cable or satellite TV company, why can’t we choose which programs to subscribe to instead of “packages” consisting of uninteresting audio music channels and TV channels?

Why don’t cable/satellite TV offer a package like this: You choose what channel you want for a fee of say, $2 or $3 per month and then have a minimum of 10 channels that can be ordered? That way we could get rid of all the garbage and pay only for what we want.

One more thing. If we subscribe to a cable or satellite company, why do we also have to pay to watch commercials? I would be interested in hearing their answer on that one.

Anyone else out there as fed up as me?
